Video: The American Indian College Fund Has a Message for Mark Zuckerberg [IndianCountryMediaNetwork.com]

 

In response to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg visiting the Blackfeet Nation in Montana, Dr. Cheryl Crazy Bull, president and CEO of the American Indian College Fund has a message.

“In his Facebook post it was clear that the social and economic issues they [Zuckerberg and his wife] saw made a powerful impression on them,” Crazy Bull said in a blog post.

“The Blackfeet have been on this land for 10,000 years, and for most of that time they followed the buffalo — for food, shelter and clothing. Then settlers came, took their land through war, and implemented programs that made the Blackfeet dependent on the state. The chairman told me they ‘ripped the pride out of our chests and back filled it with alcohol,’” Mark Zuckerberg said in his post.

I had a client when I worked as a Case Manager in a shelter some years ago, who came up for discussion at a Case Conference meeting with colleagues, as his drinking and behavior on occasion presented 'numerous problems'. Because I'd heard him, on at least three occasions, refer to his Blackfoot heritage, I stopped at the N.H. Indian Council office for some consultation/guidance before taking any action. They suggested the Health and Welfare Canada edition of "The Sacred Tree" on Native American Spirituality, and possibly "Red Road" (Native group similar to Alcoholics Anonymous). I photocopied the book and gave the copied pages to the client, asking him to 'give me his opinion' of the book. Two days later, he came banging on my office door, saying he'd misplaced pages 36-37, and 38-39, and could I please replace them for him. I did so. At the next case conference, one of my colleagues asked what I "did to [so & so, by name]. I asked why. They said he hadn't presented any problems since the last meeting. I said: "I listened!" The asked for clarification, and I asked everyone how many times they'd heard him mention his ethnic origin. A brief discussion followed....
