You are so right! Although I did engage in play as a child, I was always very anxious and self-conscious. As an adult, I give myself over to play regularly. In fact, I have a standing date with myself to go swimming on Sundays--which includes at least one trip down the water slide!

Hi Thanks for telling me about Krista Tippet --- I love her interviews --- she has interviewed Bessel van der Kolk and Thich nhat Hanh.  Her interviews are good!!!

I never got to play as a kid but had no idea how important play was for social - emotional development and I was with a friend in Hawaii and we were on the beach and he asked me a banal question and I answered it so concertedly, he said to me, you never got to play did you... I was struck... No I never did .... So I felt the sand and buried us in sand..... Thanks!!! Play is Essential!!!!!!

love this video- so good, so true and  the message of right to play fits with your idea of Awesome Childhood Experiences.... I happened to hear some of a fascinating NPR program in Krista Tippet's ON BEING program by Stewart Brown at Play Institute (I am not sure exact institution). He spoke about research on individuals who had committed homicide and in all cases these people did not have normally developed play as children...seems kind of simple but forgotten when your household is in survival mode...
