The Resilience Champion Certificate ONLINE

Are you passionate about making a difference in your family, community, or world? This 6-week course utilizes a series of online sessions to teach the key concepts of taking a resilience-building and trauma-informed approach with the goal of overcoming the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences and other sources of trauma. The topics apply to both personal and professional settings and can be used in a variety of environments including education, social work, law enforcement, administration, church, community groups, advocacy, families, the list goes on and on…

Each week includes a self-paced online learning session (approximately 30-45 minutes) that includes video and discussion posts. We also offer opportunities to meet with a resilience coach one-on-one throughout the course. Each session covers content and incorporates activities and practical tools to support the everyday application of resilience practices. We also share concrete, cross-sector examples of interventions that have worked and real-life stories of resilience.

Through a combination of instructional, interactive, and experiential learning processes, Champions will leave with their own, personalized, translation of how to lead, in their setting, on a path to resilience.

Course details:

  • The course will begin on Monday, April 30th, 2018 and last for six weeks.
  • Content will consist of six online learning modules, intersession activities designed to apply learnings, and an interactive forum to engage with other participants and coaches.
  • Each participant will receive two one-on-one coaching sessions throughout the course.
  • Content for each week will be unlocked on Mondays.

Sessions include:

Session 1: What is a Resilience Champion? In this introductory session, we will define what a Resilience Champion is and help you define your goals for being one. You will explore what you hope to achieve by participating in the course, identify the barriers and facilitating factors for you to lead this work, and think through what success would look like. This session will help lay the groundwork for building resilience and implementing trauma-informed practices in whatever setting you choose, whether that is your organization or your community. You will be encouraged to reflect on and revise these goals throughout the course.

Session 2: ACEs and the Impact of Adversity In this session, you will gain an understanding of the link between trauma and health/behavior outcomes. In addition to reviewing the findings of the original Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study, related research that utilizes the ACE study framework will also be introduced. This information supports a paradigm shift to viewing behaviors through a focus on understanding root cause issues. You will also be invited to take part in activities designed to help translate the research findings into your own individual setting.

Session 3: Social, Historical and Systems Adversity In this session, you will learn about the key principles of social, historical and systems adversity, commonly referred to as social and historical trauma.  We will review the role of epigenetics in the intergenerational transmission of health outcomes for individuals, groups, and societies. You will also be invited to take part in activities designed to help translate the research findings into your own individual setting.

Session 4: The Brain and Body In this session, you will examine how the body and brain are affected by stress. We will define different types of stress, explain how stress can become toxic, and address the body’s response to positive and toxic stress. After this session, you will be able to discuss how adaptive behaviors, thoughts, and emotions are developed in response to trauma. You will also gain skills in cognitive, behavioral, and self-regulation to help reduce compassion fatigue and burnout.

Session 5: Resilience Champion in Action In this session, we will review the key pillars of trauma-informed and resilience practices and help you integrate them into your role as a Resilient Champion. We will identify how protective factors can help heal the impact of trauma and discuss how resilience can be built and sustained. We will help participants develop practical skills to support their well-being and foster connection with clients and community members.

Session 6: So, What’s Next? This final capstone session is designed to pull together the learnings from the previous weeks and help you move from Aha! to Action. You will reflect on the goals you established at the beginning of the course and map those goals into concrete next steps for you to get started. Our goal is to support your journey in becoming a Resilience Champion.
