Building Human Resilience: A Powerful Force for Ecological Restoration [Webinar]

Building Human Resilience: A Powerful Force for Ecological Restoration [Webinar]

Thursday, June 8 from 12 noon--1 pm Pacific Time

Today's dominant culture norms and values emphasize short-term decisions. People thus find it difficult to care about the mid or long-term consequences of their actions. Global climate change, ocean acidification, a species extinction rate at least 1,000 times the normal are just a few outcomes of this tendency. The personal, economic, social, ecological, and political distress these problems generate are creating severe mental health problems such as severe anxiety, depression, PTSD, and suicides, and contributing to psycho-social-spiritual maladies such as child and spousal abuse, crime, interpersonal violence, and the rise of authoritarian governments. This webinar will describe how the increased awareness of self and context that often results from the development of robust human resilience skills can be a powerful way to overcome short-term thinking, and motivate people to restore the natural environment.

In specific, this one-hour webinar will:

  • Describe how increased awareness of how the human brain and body react to real and perceived threats increases understanding of why and how we make short-term decisions.
  • Explain how the development of robust personal, organizational, and community-based human resilience skills, practices, and policies can help people increase awareness of the social systems they are part of and how they can eliminate actions that harm those systems.
  • Illustrate how the increased awareness of self and context resulting from robust resilience skills can lead to greater concern about and engagement in efforts to restore the climate and natural environment.
