Song Truth

I love music and lyrics and growing up, before I knew about ACEs science, it's one of the places where people spoke about or emoted about complexity and adversity though never using those words.

It was comforting and familiar and sometimes wise. And now that I know about ACEs science, I hear evidence of it in all the words, tones and the mixture of experience and grief shared by many song writers. Sometimes in some of my old favorite songs and sometimes in new ones.

But songs can also show and share things hard to express.

I think, for those of us who lived with ACEs, we may have been loved by and loyal to people who sometimes hurt or betrayed us. We don't feel an automatic disconnect as though love and violence or love and neglect should not ever together. We've known they can and often do go together and that we can't and often will not banish the people responsible for the violence neglect, not as children and sometimes not even as adults.

Something that can be hard to explain to others.

So how do we make sense of ourselves and our lives and all we know and also keep our kids safe and learning and knowing different tunes, rhythms and sound tracks? That's what I'm thinking about today as I head into my day.

What songs say ACEs or healing or complexity or comfort to you? What songs show how it is or how it feels or inspire change for you? Here are a few of mine.
