This is exactly what I have been thinking...linking what happened to what's happening makes so much sense to me.  In the close to 20 years of working with families in a variety of capacities including prenatal parenting groups, 0-5 parenting groups, 1:1 home visiting, conducting biopsychosocial evaluations, and directing the family services portion of a Head Start program....I came to believe that we do not just "parent how we were parented" but rather our experiences and perception of those experiences shape our practices and beliefs as a parent.  We cannot make a significant impact on the reduction of child abuse and neglect, mental health, substance abuse, etc. solely through programs focusing on children and development.  In unison, we must actively work with those who are parenting to make the biggest impact because at the end of the day, children are still a part of a family system.

Programs that offer a classroom setting and family services in unison are close to the mark yet more needs to be done to raise the emotional intelligence of those working with parents and children, to normalize the receipt of parenting support and to engage the whole family in recognizing potentially damaging cycles and behavior and find alternative understandings that are meaningful them as the parent.  We must avoid prescriptive services and aim to walk hand in hand with the families we serve to explore behaviors and practices that are sustainable and meaningful to them and their family.

I believe there is opportunity for major systemic change in how we approach work with children and parents in our schools, doctors offices, family programs, etc.  There must be a change in societal thinking, policy making, and funding if we are to make a significant impact on occurrence of ACE's.  The fact is that ACEs are common and can be directly correlated to a myriad of negative health outcomes as adults is monumental.  Digging deeper will undoubtedly reveal more facts about the impact of ACEs and help shape the future of staving them off.
