Do you get mad when you see people doing advocacy the wrong way? Spreading misinformation, promoting ineffective solutions, promoting harmful interventions?

Now, I'm not sayin' saying in this case what is wrong and right. I do that plenty of other times. In this case I'm just asking, when YOU KNOW something is right / supported by science / supported by your community, and people do it the OTHER way. What do you do?

Because this is a loop I really struggle with. When I am strong much of the Wrong Way stuff can wash off me, but when I am tired / in pain/ angry all of it really gets to me. What do you do to either effectively convince someone to do it the RIGHT way or do not let it bother you?

Corinna,

I first try to weigh if there is any positive benefit to their actions. In a sense, is their ignorance damaging? Next, I try to examine my feeling about it. Am I angry, frustrated, sad? I then try to determine why I feel the way I do. Are my feelings anchored in my own adversity? Have the actions of this person "triggered" me?

When I realize I have been triggered I try not to respond, because I know my brain is possibly working from a place of trauma reaction, which can be less than rational. Of course if obvious abuse is occurring immediate intervention may be needed, but I may not be the one who can intervene.

And, lastly I make sure I follow the incident with good self-care for me, which is part of my self-care planning cycle.

Wishing you well,

Cathy
