Great article, and an important conversation to have. I agree that many (not all) people of color are resistant to therapy. There's also a resistance to going to the doctor, possibly due to a lack of trust, not wanting people in their private affairs, and thinking that they can handle things on their own. However, biblical wisdom would suggest otherwise. God works through prayer and also through doctors, counselors and a host of other service providers who can assist with recovery, health and wellness. I am African American and (like many African American women I know) have no resistance to seeing a therapist and routinely get medical check-ups and exams. African American men on the other hand, are more likely to resist and their wives have to coax them into it. I might also suggest that this trend could extend to men of other races as well and be more of a gender issue; at least it's worth exploring.
