Dr. Mullen:

This just came up on a chat earlier this month during a live chat held by the Parenting with ACEs Group. Here's a bit from the transcript summary and the link to the complete chat (about how parents can talk about tough topics with/to kids) :

A health care provider asked how parents felt being asked about ACEs or learning about them? He knows some worry or fear broaching topics with parents.

All the parents on the chat said they were glad to learn about ACEs, appreciated being informed.

One said she think her healing would have gone better and sooner had she known and another was mad she'd not been told sooner.

Jane Stevens, ACEs Connection Network founder and publisher, shared quite janespecifically about one practice with the same concern has done.

I love working with idea of working with the parents because answers might vary some depending if it's medical, school or professional environment and of course, depending on the parents.

I love involving parents in every part of the process so it is doing something with/for parents and doesn't feel like doing something done to or at parents.

As a parent, I'm much more willing to be open if I know why I'm being asked something and told why or how it's relevant and helpful. I also like options (like I can share an ACE score but not which answered I checked off as yes/no, etc. if I don't want to get specific. I hope that helps.

Hi, Julius -- Let me know if you'd like to talk with Drs. Meredith Kieschnick or Dierdre Pearl at Roseland. Also, The Family Center in Nashville integrated an ACEs module in their parenting classes. Here's a link to a story about that.

And you heard from Dan Sumrok yesterday. He didn't go into details about how the ACEs assessment process, so here's a link to the article that provides those details.

And the group Who's Taking an ACEs History has some other articles that you might find useful.

Cheers, Jane
