2011 child abuse victims estimated to cost Oregon $2.5 billion, study says

"One year's worth of child abuse victims is estimated to cost Oregon $2.5 billion over the course of those children's lives, according to a study released this week.

Almost 11,600 children were victims of child abuse and neglect in 2011, according to figures from the Oregon Department of Human Services.

Each case of child abuse costs the state about $210,000 over the child's lifetime, according to the Preserving Childhood report from the Children's Trust Fund of Oregon and Prevent Child Abuse Oregon. The cost figure factors in subsequent estimated expenses for foster care, juvenile crime and prison, child welfare, mental health, special education adult health care and other expenses...."
