[Mr. Holland and Mr. Rose]:

I'm writing you today because I noticed that the [Name of Your Local Newspaper], my local newspaper, has not done an article (unless I somehow missed it) on the "Adverse Childhood Experiences Study" conducted by the Centers for Disease Control. This study, probably the most important public health study in recent times, is the subject of more than 60 journal articles, has been referenced by other researchers more than 1,500 times, and has been the topic of hundreds of speeches around the world. Recently the New York Times and The Huffington Post have featured stories on the study.

[As the mother/father/parents of a special-needs child,] news on this research is very important to me. I would like to encourage your newspaper to run an article on the ACE Study, too. For your reference, I have included a link to The Huffington Post article by Jane Ellen Stevens of October 8, 2012.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-ellen-stevens/the-adverse-childhood-exp_1_b_1943647.html

It is a three-part article, just click on the links at the bottom of each of the three sections to be taken to the next portion of the article.

I would very much appreciate hearing your thoughts on my suggestion. I can be reached at [email2me@gmail.com], or at [509.123.4567].

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from one or the other of you sometime soon.

Sincerely,

[Your Name(s)]

Follow -up: Why am I so passionate about the ACE study?  I am the foster-adoptive mother of a 10-year-old daughter who has Reactive Attachment Disorder.  She was severely neglected as an infant.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no sure-fire cure for RAD.  Lots of therapists try to treat it, some with more success than others.  My daughter is my only child and I intensively therapeutically parented her for years.  I know I/we made an impact on her behaviors, but even still, she is extremely socially dysfunctional and very challenging to  live with.  I formed Smile At Your Baby!, and am passionate about the ACEs Study because I am passionate about prevention!  I founded SAYB a little under two years ago, but just learned about the ACEs study about a week ago.  I am committed to helping vulnerable families who are caught up in a cycle of uninformed parenting break that cycle!  No, it's not easy, but, I believe that somebody must try.  So, I'm trying.

Smiles, Shelley Calissendorff

I will update here if/when I get a response from my local newspaper and let you know the results.

Dear fellow ACE advocates,  the above pledge was created to help make people aware of the ACE study, to make them aware of their own ACE score, their child's ACE score and to SPREAD THE WORD by getting articles published in many, MANY more newspapers!  I strongly encourage each of you to email the editor of your local paper using your own words, or, using the template I've provided.  Either way we NEED to let them know this is not only newsworthy, but it's BIG news that people need to know about and want to read about.  If each of us here did this we could make great strides!  If we each shared the pledge with friends, family, cohorts, etc and emphasized its importance we could make even greater strides!  Please, it's so easy to do, do it TODAY!  :D  In advance, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!  <3  ~ Shelley Calissendorff, Founder/Executive Director, Smile At Your Baby!
