Reno classrooms may play a part in saving the Paiute language from extinction.

This semester, for the first time, the University of Nevada, Reno offered a Paiute language class. It follows the Washoe County School District inclusion of the native language at three of its high schools.

“This should have happened a long time ago,” said Christina Thomas, a UNR graduate and doctoral student at the University of California, Davis who pushed for the class at the university. Thomas, who grew up on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, helped get the class off the ground when she was a graduate student at UNR.

After finishing her doctorate degree in Native American studies at Davis, she plans to return to Northern Nevada to focus on preserving the language and Paiute culture.
