Animal abuse may signal other problem behaviour - Canada

"Mary Zilney, chief executive officer of Women's Crisis Services, is the driving force behind the creation of the Human Animal Vulnerability Coalition of Waterloo Region. The coalition is the first of its kind in Canada, and one of its goals is to educate the public on the link between abuse of humans and abuse of animals....

"There are many ways in which abuse of animals and humans intersect. Sometimes an adult will force the rest of the family to watch as he or she hurts the family pet, as a form of emotional abuse. Or a child who witnesses his father beating his mother will in turn hurt the family's cat or dog.                        

"Sometimes the child acts like Dad, so (the child) will abuse the animal," Zilney said. Or "the child wants to demonstrate some kind of control, and the only kind of control they have is over the animal."...
