A SOCIAL CONVERSATION & ACTION CAMPAIGN

KPJR’s #BeTheOne campaign has spanned the globe, reaching and encouraging individuals to recognize and share how they are positively impacting the lives of others.  Likewise, #ResilienceReset offers events and strategies for building resilience and coping with toxic stress. As educators, students and families return to school during this time of chronic stress and amid much uncertainty, KPJR will seek to provide global support tools through the relaunch of both campaigns. We hope to spur community conversation, provide useful tips and spotlight active contributors who are building caring, informed and resilient individuals, families, organizations, and communities.

To re-launch #BeTheOne, we are excited to present a piece by Austin Kimbrough in which he shares his current #ResilienceReset and how he works to #BeTheOne. Kimbrough is a 2020 Graduate of Hampton University who also launched KPJR's HBCU (Historically Black College & Universities) initiative in 2018.

KPJR encourages and challenges you to share your stories of hope, courage, resilience and to spotlight those individuals or organizations who model #BeTheOne, who are that #OneCaringAdult and their #ResilienceReset tips.

#BeTheOne: Faith, Hope & Resilience

A 2020 college grad shares his COVID 19 coping skills
and quest to become a change agent.

RIGHT NOW, the biggest stress I would say that is in my life is not knowing what is next; not being able to see past COVID-19. It hangs like a cloud over me, and a lot of young people’s heads, especially those of us who graduated from college in 2020, because our time - our commencement - is supposed to be NOW! It feels like life is on a big pause and you don’t know when it will end.

“COVID-19 ... A #BeTheOne Moment”

Directly, COVID 19 delayed my move to New York after graduation to work in professional sports -- a position that I have worked toward for the past 4 years. With my friends and classmates, there have been ups and downs. Early on it was harder because not everyone is afforded the same opportunities, and that’s difficult for people to anticipate and for others to understand. But as time passes, I firmly believe that we will prove that our generation, as a whole, is tougher and hungrier than ever. Having seen how creative we have had to be, and how we have had to make something out of nothing, I believe that we will be transformative, rise above our circumstances to excel. I can't wait to see what is in store for us. However, a positive created by the COVID 19 quarantine for me is that I have more free time on my hands and I have been able to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank 3 days a week helping to provide the basic necessity of food for those who are in need. And, I love every single second of giving back and helping others in this way. This is a #BeTheOne moment for me.

“Being A Black Man In America”

Another stress that I have felt more recently is being a Black Man in America. And, more importantly, dealing with racism in America. Being self-aware is one of the greatest things that I am so glad that my parents instilled in me. But even being self-aware and self- conscious doesn’t take away from the fact that George Floyd could’ve been me. It could’ve been my little Brother. It could’ve been my best friend or someone that I went to school with.

I desperately want change, and my mind immediately goes to what I can do to make our society better. How can I ensure social justice for my generation and the next? I’m talking with friends and family about steps that we can take to make our communities better because that’s where it starts. And this is stress for me, but good stress. The need to help people and to be a catalyst for positive change has always been something in which I feel a great obligation and take immense pride.

“Hope”

The biggest problem I have encountered has been my ability to handle such drastic change, and handle it well. During Quarantine, I am proud to say I believe I’ve handled it well. My parents were very big on creating a comfortable environment for me and my little brother when I came home from my senior year in college in March. In our family, my mother has always “forced” us to be close, and after coming back home we became closer than ever. We had some rough patches early on, but that was expected with me being gone for 4 years at Hampton.

I believe mental health during times like these is especially important because at some point everyone needs support or to talk to someone. My Parents made a point for us to have family discussions nightly to make sure that none of us were feeling discouraged, or down because in times like these we need to have faith and hope. My mother’s maiden name is Hope, and that is what has been a driving force for me during this pandemic.

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” – Desmond Tutu

“Faith”

Through everything that has happened in 2020, I have learned that you have to persevere. You have to put your troubles and prayers into God’s hands. If you try to handle all of your stress and problems by yourself, it’ll be too much for you. The biggest gift from this time has been that my relationship with my family and our relationship with each other and God has become stronger than ever. 2020 has thrown a lot on everyone, and if we can stand and remain resilient, we can overcome.
