Catch Up on Our "A Better Normal" Series While We Take a Break This Week

When shelter-in-place orders first took effect in early March, I was just recovering from 3 days serious fever and chills (no tests available at that time so we'll never know if it was "a" virus or "the" virus). I went to bed on March 12th with an upset stomach and I woke up on March 15 to find that all sports games, concerts, events, and gatherings were being canceled, flights to Europe were now a no-go, coronavirus infection rates around the world were skyrocketing, and and schools and universities were sending their students home for the foreseeable future.

Our founder and publisher, Jane Stevens, called upon the staff here at ACEs Connection to brainstorm. How could we best be of service to our community during these turbulent times? We decided to have an open conversation and invite all of you members to help us brainstorm. On Friday, March 20, 2020, we hosted a conversation on Zoom, at that time unaware that we'd now have whole Zoom lives for the next 3 months (and counting), complete with Zoom life memes and comedic videos featuring beloved pets.

What came out of that first call was the term "A Better Normal" for the new society we are envisioning and creating together to be trauma-informed. Over the past 10 weeks we have sat in Zoom calls with collectively, now over 1,000 of you to learn from experts on topics such as violence prevention, racial health equity, and how to upend education. We have asked tough questions and we have helped each other spread ideas across the United States and the world. We have shared resources and ideas. We have connected with each other and realized that we are not alone with our wild ideas that the world could and should be a better place, if everyone could know about the science of adverse childhood experiences.

It has been an honor to produce these episodes alongside the talented expert staff of ACEs Connection, who are bringing in their expert connections to each episode for inspiring conversations. I learned that it's possible to run for-profit housing developments that help lower-income families thrive. I learned that the helping recently incarcerated men understand their own childhood trauma helps them end violent behaviors at home. I l learned that some young students, now at home and not in the classroom, have no way of accessing teachings because they reside in homes without internet access or computers.

We will be taking this week off from producing any new episodes. We will see you again on Tuesday, June 2nd when I will be leading my first A Better Normal discussion as the host on ACEs and Higher Education during COVID-19 with Boston University School of Public Health Professor, Dr. Carol Dolan, who teaches the Trauma-Informed Care class to graduate students, and with Laura Hofmann, MA in Education, Miramar Community College Career Counselor, San Diego, CA. >>Click here to register<<

In the meantime, we hope you will take this opportunity to catch up on past episodes.
