Children's Resilience Initiative leaders on a speaking tour

Teri Barila and Mark Brown, the co-founders of the Children's Resilience Initiative in Walla Walla, WA, have scheduled a series of events this fall. The tour is a continuation of the program’s recently-completed spring and summer tour on adverse childhood experiences. They spoke at national and regional mental health conferences in Charleston, Chicago, Phoenix, Seattle, Pasco, WA, and Portland OR. The upcoming events, taking place from October through November, are listed below:

  • October 2, 2012: Philanthropy Northwest Conference, Walla, Walla, WA (By invitation only). Resilience Incorporated Into Commitment to Community Neighborhood Outreach Work. Barila will highlight strategies employed by a neighborhood outreach organization to embed resilience in daily practice.
  • October 19, 2012: Blue Ridge Elementary School Training, Walla Walla, WA (For pre-school and ECAP staff only) on trauma-informed and parent involvement. CRI will assist school staff in a deeper conversation about behavioral strategies for children with trauma histories. 
  • October 29-30, 2012, Detroit, MI. ACEs presentations to various mental health providers in Detroit and Oakland County, Michigan, to provide information about the many components of the CRI community response to ACEs in Walla Walla, WA. 
  • November 16, 2012: Washington State School Directors Conference, Spokane, WA. This features CRI and Walla Walla's Lincoln High School, presenting dramatic data regarding school suspensions and reductions based on trauma-informed practices.

Known for its expertise and innovation in the field of community response to family trauma and children’s resilience, CRI’s unique model was co-developed by Barila, coordinator of the Walla Walla Community Network, and Dr. Mark Brown, executive director of Friends of Children of Walla Walla.

CRI was created with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Washington State Family Policy Council, Sherwood Trust, Blue Mountain Community Foundation, in addition to several other funders, organizations, professionals and peers in the fields of childhood resilience and mental health.

The CRI team comprises local agencies, businesses, parents, social service entities, school districts and law enforcement officials.
