Alameda County Trauma Informed Care - This website offers information on being and developing a trauma-informed agency as well as trauma-informed resources for professionals and survivors.

Greater Buffalo Trauma-Informed System of Care Community Plan - Supported by the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, the Trauma-Informed Community Initiative of Western New York Coalition has developed a Greater Buffalo Trauma-Informed System of Care Community Plan to show how the community can help meet the need for education and training about the effects of trauma, trauma-informed care, and trauma-specific services in the Greater Buffalo area.

Philadelphia, PA -- The Institute for Safe Families (ISF) convened the first meeting of the Philadelphia Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Task Force in April 2012. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded ISF a one-year grant in July 2012 to investigate the extent of ACEs among Philadelphians, plan for a sustainable ACE-informed care infrastructure, and strengthen the Task Force’s work. Details about the project, the grant and task force members can be found in this press release ISF-RWJ.pdf. In May 2013, ISF presented results of the Philadelphia Urban ACE Survey at the National ACE Summit in Philadelphia. San Diego, CA -- The San Diego Trauma-Informed Guide Team is a grassroots, multidisciplinary team of professionals working in Human Health Services in San Diego County. Co-founders Kimberly Beckstead and Betsy Knight formed the volunteer organization in late 2008. They and other team members developed the team's core competencies -- CoreCompetencies.docx; a brochure -- SDTIGTbrochure.pdf; and have trained about 1,100 people from a wide variety of service agencies about ACEs and trauma-informed practices. They're working on a trauma-informed toolkit, and are planning a Trauma-Informed Day in San Diego and to expand their contacts and training to more agencies and organizations in San Diego County. San Francisco, CA --  The San Francisco Adolescent Health Working Group (AHWG) developed the Trauma & Resiliency module for the AHWG Adolescent Provider Toolkit Series. It  features more than 50 pages of screening and assessment tools, capacity building and technical assistance resources, and psychoeducation materials for providers, youth/young adults, and parents/caregivers to increase communication about trauma in health, education, juvenile justice, human services, workforce and youth development programs. Working group partners include the Center for Youth WellnessHealthy Environments and Response to Trauma in Schools (HEARTS), Youth Justice Institute, and San Francisco's   Department of Public Health and Department of Children, Youth and their Families. In addition to developing the trauma toolkit, the working group also plans to expand trauma-informed training and capacity building among SF-based providers. It is hosting the 2013 10th Annual AHWG Teen/Young Adult Provider Gathering, where the Trauma, ACEs, and Resiliency toolkit module and related activities will be featured. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Vincent Felitti, Co-Principal Investigator of the CDC's Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. Contact: Alicia St. Andrews, AHWG Coordinator. 

Spokane, WA -- This report -- Complex Trauma in the Spokane Area: Key Informant Perspectives (ComplexTraumaReport.pdf) -- clearly maps out where Spokane is in its efforts to become an ACE- and trauma-informed community. It was done by Clegg & Associates for the Empire Health Foundation. 

 

 

2. City, town projects

Lake County, CA - St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake was awarded a Community Transformation Grant (CTG) from the Centers for Disease Control. Among the objectives of the CTG project is to create awareness of the important role that emotional health plays in chronic disease. The Lake County CTG project will be using research based on the ACE Study to achieve its objectives. (May 2013).

New Haven, CT -- In February 2013 the Office of the Mayor announced "The Community Resilience Initiative" based on the science from the ACE Study. Details on the initiative can be found here.

Port Townsend, WA -- In 2005, the Jefferson County  Community Network began using the Adverse Childhood   Experiences (ACE) Study as a foundation for its work to prevent substance abuse and prevent child abuse and neglect. Now, when a pregnant woman visits the family services clinic at Jefferson County Public Health, in addition to the typical questions about tobacco, alcohol and other drug use, she's also screened for her childhood trauma by completing the 10-question ACE survey. Here's a story about the town's efforts to integrate ACE concepts into all of its agencies. Contact: Anne Dean, program manager for the Jefferson County Community Network. 

Shasta County, CA   --  In 2012, 30 agencies in Shasta County joined forces to address adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in a systematic, deliberate and collaborative way. Skamania Klickitat Community Network, WA -- Our mission is to build strong, healthy communities. We sponsor classes, workshops, trainings and other learning opportunities that focus on reducing the rates of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their lifelong effects on people. Tarpon Springs, FL -- After about eight months of engaging and educating community leaders about ACEs and trauma-informed practices, this Gulf coast city of 24,000 declared itself a trauma-informed community in February 2011. Its project is called the Peace4Tarpon initiative. So far, it's held a community education day that focused on trauma, and several organizations have integrated or are planning to integrate some aspect of trauma-informed practices, including a local elementary school, the local housing authority, the sheriff's ex-offender program, and a local college. Walla Walla, WA -- The Children's Resilience Initiative came about as a result of the inspiration and work of Teri Barila, who manages the the Walla Walla County Community Network, one of 42 community networks in Washington State that were part of the Family Policy  Council. Her partner in its creation is Dr. Mark Brown, executive director of Friends of Children of Walla WallaBarila and other community members are focusing on mobilizing the community to "radically reduce the number of adverse childhood experiences while building resilience and a more effective service delivery system". One of the early examples of success is Lincoln High School, an alternative high school whose principal and staff implemented ACE concepts and trauma-informed practices to reduce suspensions by 85% in one year, and changed the culture of the school. CRI has also involved parents, helped develop ongoing projects in low-income neighborhoods, and local law enforcement. Contact: Teri Barila, coordinator of the Walla Walla County Community Network.
