Creating a Trauma-Informed System of Care in Monroe County - New York

"In 2005, the Monroe County Office of Mental Health (MCOMH) was awarded a six year System of Care (SOC) grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to transform children’s mental health services. SOC is an approach to collaboration and coordination across the child-serving system including mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, and schools in partnership with community agencies, families and youth to ensure that the array of necessary and appropriate services and supports are in place. The core set of System of Care values—youth guided, family driven, culturally and linguistically competent, community based, best practice oriented—are the cornerstone to building and sustaining system transformation. In Monroe County, the SOC community decided to add “trauma-informed” as a core value, understanding that taking a trauma-informed approach is fundamental to addressing the disparities that exist in terms of access to and accessibility of services, particularly for urban youth of color."
