Guidance for Teachers and Counselors to Help Kids at Risk at Home

People are beginning to be aware that one result of the increased stress around COVID-19 is the tragic fact that child abuse and neglect is increasing, but the safety net provided by schools is no longer in place. Teachers and counselors can continue to be a hero to students in this time of crisis, and can help mitigate the negative impact of traumatic events and stress.  Caregivers might not be able to do it alone.   We (Dr. Rachel Gilgoff, a child abuse pediatrician and trauma expert, and Sarah Rock, a former children's attorney and child abuse prevention specialist) designed this two page tool to support K-12 teachers, counselors and others who might have contact with students and their families isolated at home during crises. The goal is to help to utilize their modified role to help children be safe and well amidst the current crisis. The tool is based on science and best practice, includes a Child Well-being Check, and is written from an asset based perspective. It's also free, and we hope you’ll share it with the people you know who might be interested.  http://www.rockresults.org/tools.html

Wow! So timely, I was just speaking to the superintendent of the school board I am on about how to support our families on a deeper level around crises due to COVID. I'd love to talk more about this and how to use the tools in our school district.

Thank you for sharing.

Hi Sarah, What a great resource! Well developed and so timely! Thanks so much for sharing it here on ACEs Connection! Karen

Thanks Karen. We appreciate so much the ability to share on ACEs Connection! A great community asset.

MInvera, really appreciate feedback! CRPs are so important, and can play a vital role in kids' safety. I'm glad you're there and voicing your concern. Let me know if I can help, and thank you so much for sharing the tool. I figure if it can help even one child it's worth spreading the word!

Hi Sarah, Thank you so much for this great resource! I'm a member of California's Citizen Review Panel for Critical Incidents and Fatalities resulting from abuse and neglect. I have been so concerned about children in unsafe situations with less visibility and access to support. I will share this with our district today, as well as with others who I know will be interested and will put this to use. Thanks!
