Health systems coalition training people to recognize, respond to mental health issues [Jacksonville.com]

A coalition of five Jacksonville hospital systems has created an eight-hour course designed to train people to perform what they are calling “adult mental health first aid.”

The goal is to give members of the public skills to help someone who is developing or experiencing a mental health crisis.

An example of a crisis that a trained lay person could recognize and help somone with a mental health crisis is that the person in crisis is suicidal.

The goal is to train 10,000 volunteers.

The hospital systems involved are Baptist Health, Brooks Rehabilitation, the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, St. Vincent’s HealthCare and UF Health Jacksonville.

Charles Moreland, the city’s director of community affairs and former director/fire chief of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, said a 2014 Jacksonville Community Council study found more than 250,000 people in Jacksonville and Yulee had mental health issues. Only 41 percent were seeking treatment, he said.
