"In the column below, Mohan Krishnan, the director of children's services at Hope Network, discusses the needs of children who have suffered trauma, such as abuse, neglect or witnessing violence. He outlines ways people can help create a caring environment, as a community and on a personal level....

"People will say quality care comes with a cost, and money is tight....

"It is true these services are not free, but we have a moral obligation to invest in the future of our at-risk children....

"However, there are things we can do on a personal level as well.

"One of the core principles of the Trauma Informed Care model, which my team at Hope Network follows, is to avoid making assumptions about who might and might not have experienced trauma, and instead focus on an environment in which these kids can thrive....

"Children with past trauma do well when they can depend on the whole community rather than being isolated in a cycle of abuse....
