How to Find Your Purpose in Midlife [greatergood.berkeley.edu]

My youngest will be going off to college next fall, meaning I’ll soon be an empty nester. After having raised my kids for the last 22 years or so, a large part of my purpose in life will leave along with my son.

I know I’m not alone in feeling both sad and panicky about this big shift—a lot of other people face similar feelings. We wonder what life will be like and what we will do with ourselves once our kids have flown the coop.

One possibility is to renew our sense of purpose.

You are so right, Gail.

“Talkin’ About My Generation!”

ACEs across the lifespan is one of the kajillion foci I have. 😉 Our ACEs trauma, even if we are doing all the Resilience actions (sleep, mindfulness, diet, exercise, healthy community, healthy relationships, detoxing on substances, situations, people, etc.) will reveal itself in different ways at different stages. Being an empty nester is one of those clarion bell ringer times when “we” must regroup. I am sure regrouping with my two adult children 3000 miles away. In looking at what is possible in my “third” act, putting energy into this movement and the policies and candidates supporting it, makes perfect sense. I am with you in inviting Baby Boomers to put some true value to the legacy our generation leaves behind, by making these years not more “ME” but some healthy, invaluable “WE.”  Our putting love, brains, wisdom, energy, and experienced humanity to the greater good through this movement? This could be incredibly redemptive for Boomers, and give new gravitas to the human-factor contributions of our generation.

Get involved with your local ACEs and Resilience building activities or if there aren't any in your community, start one!  Us powerful middle aged empty nesters or soon to be empty nesters (my daughter graduates next year) have SO MUCH to offer our communities!
