Law and Justice Interview with Elizabeth Perry (Soundcloud.com/jane-mulcahy/)

March 24th, 2020 Jane Mulcahy of Law and Justice podcast interviewed Elizabeth Perry about her ACEs advocacy in Canada and Nova Scotia.

From Jane: In this extended Law and Justice special on "ACEs: an intergenerational public health threat" I speak to Elizabeth Perry from Nova Scotia in Canada. We discuss how her discovery of the 1998 Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study helped her understand the impact of own multiple experience of childhood adversity and the absence of an emotional buffer to help her process her reality. Her personal challenges in adulthood suddenly made sense. We talk about Canada's history of colonialism and the harms done to indigenous Canadians, including ongoing failures to atone for the past and adopt trauma-responsive approaches to the collective wounds. We discuss how Bessel van der Kolk views ACEs as the biggest public health threat of our time - under normal non-Covid 19 circumstances. Elizabeth tells me how she is on a mission to raise awareness of ACEs in Canada and to inform people that acknowledging past painful experiences and welcoming repressed emotions is central to both individual and collective healing.
