Mental health programs offered to Border Patrol agents [ValleyCentral.com]

From delivering babies to rescuing immigrants on the brink of death, Border Patrol agents do it all.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector is now exceeding 250,000 apprehensions of undocumented immigrants.

With record-breaking numbers mental health for agents is a priority.

“In law enforcement we encounter unique situations that the normal public do not encounter,” Agent Tony Ibarra, Peer Support Program Coordinator, said.

Ibarra heads the RGV Sector program that currently has 91 agents that are trained in counseling techniques.

They are on hand 24-7 to help their fellow agents work through problems.

“Being Border Patrol agents we are more familiar with what they are going through,” Ibarra said.

Since February the RGV Sector Peer Support Program has logged more than a thousand hours on the phone and in person.
