Rep. Tim Ryan, whose wife is a first grade teacher, shares his thoughts on education reform and why the first thing the U.S. education system needs to do is “deal with kids’ trauma.”
Starting at about 6:34 in this clip, Rep. Ryan discusses the need for “a trauma curriculum” because "most of the kids who come in are in some kind of trauma. They have adverse childhood experiences that we never deal with. I want to push a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum in every school in the United States, a trauma-based curriculum. I want a mental health counselor in every school in the United States so we start dealing with the root causes of our kids' inability to learn. We know what the brain science tells us: it's that when you’re in trauma — when you’re in flight or fight mode— you literally  can’t access the part of the brain you need to learn.

“I don’t care what plans are. My wife's a teacher, I want her to make more. I mean teachers should make more. But  if you’re not dealing with the climate of the classroom —the trauma and the kids' adverse childhood experiences — you’re not gonna get the kid ready to learn,” said Rep. Ryan.
