PTSD in the spotlight at White House Medal of Honor ceremony

"The struggles faced by many veterans and servicemembers in coping with post-traumatic stress took center stage at the White House on Monday as President Obama awarded the Medal of Honorto Army Staff Sgt. Ty M. Carter....

"In his remarks, Obama said it was “absolutely critical. . . to put an end to any stigma” that prevents troops from getting treatment for PTSD.

“No one should ever die waiting for the mental health care they need,” Obama added...."

“No one should ever die waiting for the mental health care they need,” Obama added"

UNTIL PTSD is recognized and treated for the ACTUAL ailment that it is, a symptomatic condition of traumatic brain injury and thus a PHYSICAL INJURY and NOT a "mental health" concern, there will continue to be the stigma, lack of treatment, and/or inaccurate treatment that will CONTINUE to leave veterans (not to mention athletes and day to day individuals that suffer from post concussion/concussive syndrome/tbi and its related symptomatic conditions) suffering with overwhelming issues.  We need to recognize that we have been treating the symptoms and not the illness and until that changes there will continue to be individuals that will be overwhelmed by it and suffer, cause injury to themselves and others and, worse, ultimately die a senseless and needless death."
