Saudi Arabia's new anti-domestic violence campaign on Twitter

"...The youth are spearheading a campaign to denounce domestic violence targeted against women. This group of youngsters want to capture the attention of men in Saudi Arabia and spread awareness. Called 'Hit her, if you dare,' participants take pictures with placards and white scarves and post them on Twitter. Each placard has an anti-domestic violence message....

"A Human Rights Watch Report published in 2012 notes how Saudi Arabia is the only country where women are legally not allowed to drive, and where a guardianship system means women are treated as minors, needing to seek male permission before undertaking any such activity as studying or travelling....

"Although it is unclear as to how successful the campaign has been so far, it is encouraging to see that the main perpetrators of domestic violence in the country, men, have been responding positively to the campaign. Moreover, via its heavy dependency on Twitter, the campaign has now become a global movement."
