Self Regulation Skills and the Native American Community

I thought this posting was of interest.  Carolyn Curtis

Dear SARHM Colleagues,

As we have discussed, the construct of ‘self-regulation’ may be problematic in its applications beyond Euro-American cultures, in part because it implies a self-centered orientation. Instead, the primary orientation of many cultures, including many Native American cultures, is the community. I am pleased to share with you a new brief titled ‘Reflections on the Relevance of “Self-Regulation” for Native Communities’ that has been published as part of the Self-Regulation and Toxic Stress Serieshttps://www.acf.hhs.gov/opre/r...r-native-communities. In this brief, we consider ‘self-regulation’ from these divergent perspectives with the intention that the underlying value of the construct and the research underlying ‘self-regulation’ may be made more apparent and relevant for Native communities.

This study represents just another attempt by white officials to assimilate Indian ideology into mainstream vocabulary.  Acceptance of this "Self-Regulation" theory lies in the recruitment of how many Native professionals can be used to justify the study.  Every study conducted by non-indigenous people and organizations needs to start with their definition of "white racism."  A good place to start is by reading Robin DiAngelo's recent book (154 pages) WHITE FRAGILITY, why its so hard for white people to talk about Racism.  Every study is affected by it.  It is also a good book for People of Color to read in order to understand how we protect white fragility due to the backlash from them whenever race is hinted at.  Self-Regulation can only work after the acceptance that white supremacy is the founding principle of the U.S. and is the current dominant theme.  Read and grow.
