Setting NAMI Priorities: Serious Mental Illnesses? Trauma? Poverty? The “Worried Well?”

"The National Alliance on Mental Illness bills itself as ” the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.”  As a lifetime member of NAMI, active supporter of NAMI, and frequent speaker at NAMI groups, I greatly admire and support that goal. But I’m also curious about what that mandate encompasses.

"What are NAMI’s priorities when it comes to specific mental disorders?...

"Now consider this view from another email:...

"Victims of trauma – which both of my parents clearly are – tend to repeat what has been done to them – to their children. What if NAMI’s stubborn clinging to medications and the medical model has more to do with guilt than reality?...

"...You might wish to read an article in Behavioral Healthcare magazine written by Ron Manderscheid, PhD, who writes that “poverty causes mental illness.”...

"How does an organization that pledges to represent ”the millions of Americans affected by mental illness”  chose which of those illnesses it will prioritize?

"It’s a question worth asking."
