Paul Tough also mentions the CDC's Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, led by Drs. Vincent Felitti and Robert Anda. The ACE Study links childhood trauma and family dysfunction with the adult onset of our most common chronic diseases, as well as social and emotional problems, such as violence, depression and suicide -- in a group of 17,000 mostly white, middle- and upper-middle class, college-educated members of Kaiser Permanente in San Diego who all had jobs and great health care. Eighteen states have also done their own ACE surveys, with similar results...."
