I LOVE this quote! Ā Doesn't it seem to justify my flow chart?

"Over the past decade it has become abundantly clear that the in utero and immediate postnatal environments and the relations between the child and caregivers within the first years of life can have direct and enduring effects on the child's brain development and behavior...Indeed, the enduring impact of early maternal care...is likely to be one of the most important discoveries in all of science." Leckman and March (condensed)Ā

Shelley -- To ineffective (or perhaps 'unhealthy') parenting, I'd add something like an 'uninvolved community'. That's not quite the right word...A community that doesn't intervene when a family is obviously troubled and needs help. You could also add a violent environment, i.e., living in a dangerous neighborhood or attending a school that doesn't keep students safe from bullying, etc. I think you can have effective parenting and an unhealthy environment and have the same outcomes.
