Tonier Cain to address childhood trauma [HTRNews.com]

Tonier Cain was arrested 83 times and convicted of 66 crimes.

She was homeless, a drug addict, a prostitute.

"She is so impactful. She is somebody who has been through (trauma) herself and has made so many changes because somebody took the time to listen to her," said Tracy Geenen, executive director of the United Way of Manitowoc County. "Her story is breathtaking."

Cain will give a public presentation at 6 p.m. April 20 at the Capitol Civic Centre in downtown Manitowoc. There is no admission cost, and a book signing of "Healing Neen" will follow.

"After surviving a childhood of unspeakable sexual abuse, unrelenting violence, and betrayal by systems that were charged with helping, Ms. Tonier Cain stands before her audiences today, a testimony to the resiliency of the human spirit exemplifying the innate human instinct to survive," her website states. "Tonier 'Neen' Cain lived on the streets for 20 nightmarish years. Years filled with hunger, brutality and a lifestyle when described seems unconscionable.

"Incarcerated and pregnant in 2004, someone finally took the time to ask, 'What happened to you?' instead of 'What’s wrong with you?' It is at that moment she began her journey to become a survivor and for the first time in her life began to live with more hope than fear."
