Trauma in real time

Great that you see the good in this youngster and that you responded to his emotional pain. I just heard from a teacher this past week that she, too, did likewise. She picked up on a student's agitation and anxiety when he entered the classroom in the morning. She approached him and commented on her observation and asked if he would like to have some time out of the classroom, and he accepted. When she went out to check on him he was crying and when she asked what was the matter, he revealed that his Dad had died. With her acknowledging his pain and loss he proceeded to bawl. She was able to get him to the guidance counselor . Now he will take a time out on his own with her permission and he feels understood by her.

Karen, I work in an amazing district. One super positive is that it is small and so the community rallies around all of us. We've had 3 principals in as many years, but I've found each to have his/her own value and the structure at the school remains the same - we are a trauma-informed school and my being a therapist, as well as a high school teacher has been an amazing journey...thank you for your words. Lola, I am so grateful you could be this student’s one caring adult today.  Your actions make a difference!  Your poignant story is a timely reminder of the importance of the work to prevent trauma and build Resilience. 

At a future time, I would be interested in hearing more about this student’s journey AND how how as a trauma informed campus he was provided a safe place to process these tragedies.
