Would Jesus Ever Hit a Child?

I have spent some time on Robbyn's stopspanking.org site. I watched her documentary trailer. It got me thinking about this question which I started asking children a few years back.

Here is a little of my writing on that question...

---

This was written a few years ago, then I left South America. Now I am back...

Two questions I have asked children in South America

I have been in South America since January of 2004. First I was in Ecuador for about nine months. Then I was in Peru for over a year. In Ecuador I felt very disturbed by the amount of people claiming to be Catholics and professing to be followers of Christ, but at the same time, hitting their children.

(Then after seeing a sign outside of a church which said you can't wear shorts or miniskirts inside the church...)

... I started to ask children these two questions;

- Do you think Jesus would ever hit a child?

- Do you think Jesus would wear a tie?

I found that the children would quickly say no to both questions.

Then I started asking teenagers and adults. Generally speaking, the older the person, the more they hesitated to answer, and the more likely they were to say something like, "Well, it depends..."

I offer this question -- "Do you think Jesus would ever hit /spank a child?"--  to Robbyn as another one for her documentary.

Good luck Robbyn. You are doing much needed work. As I travel and tell people in other countries that in the USA I was hit with a board in school and in some states you can still hit students with boards (yet in more and  more schools in America you can't hug your friends - see this youtube video ) they find it hard to believe. They think America is the land of the free and the leader of human rights etc.

So sometimes I have to send them links to news reports etc. They really can't believe it. The USA is so out of line with European countries, for example, as the children's world map on Robbyn's site shows (I am not sure now if it is on her stopspanking.org site or her Facebook site - my slow connection is making it hard to check)

I would also like you to consider what the world map would look like if it only showed countries where children were not forced to go to school, and where they were not forced to live with their parents until age 18 or some similar age. But where instead, the children's and teenagers' feelings and needs were taken more into account in legal decisions affecting them.

You can read more about my questions for children and see the picture of the church sign here

I have also written about this on my love page. There I also write about another question I have asked children "What is more important, love or education?"
