A System of Prevention: Applying a Systems Approach to Public Health [journals.sagepub.com]

By Juliet Sims MPH, RD, Manal J. Aboelata , MPH, Sage Journals, May, 12, 2019. Among public health and health care practitioners, there is growing understanding that individuals make choices about their health not in a vacuum but based on the social, physical, and economic environments surrounding them and the resources available to them. Furthermore, we know that we, as a society, have designed these environments and resource allocation processes and that those in turn can produce better or...

Childhood trauma tied to tooth loss later in life [University of Michigan News]

ANN ARBOR—Even if children grow up to overcome childhood adversity, the trauma they experience in early life causes them to be at greater risk for tooth loss, according to University of Michigan researchers. Haena Lee, a postdoctoral researcher at the U-M Institute for Social Research, assessed the impact of adverse childhood events on oral health—specifically, total tooth loss—later in life. These events included childhood trauma, abuse and, to a lesser extent, smoking. To read the full...

Healing From Complex Trauma Begins With Compassion

There’s no handbook for being a parent (wouldn’t it be great if there were?) but that doesn’t mean you can’t change the way you take care of your teen, your whole family , and yourself. Many of the parents we meet feel like they’re failing their child. Parents see their teen struggling at school, lashing out at home, isolating, and pulling back from activities they used to love, and they don’t know how to communicate with him or to cope with what’s happening. The moms and dads we talk to...

CHCS-ACEs Connection Webinar: Integrating a Trauma-Informed Approach into Substance Use Disorder Treatment [CHCS]

Experiencing trauma — events such as parental divorce, living with a family member who is substance dependent, abuse, and neglect — strongly correlate to health-risk behaviors later in life, including substance use. This webinar, cosponsored by the Center for Health Care Strategies and ACEs Connection, highlighted how two providers operating in vastly...

How Luxury Units Turn Into Affordable Housing [citylab.com]

By Nolan Gray, CITYLAB, June 5, 2019. There’s a fierce argument about housing affordability and supply that’s raging in the urbanist community. The big question: Does building “luxury” (or market rate) housing in wealthy neighborhoods free up more housing for everyone? Advocates in the “Yes In My Backyard” (YIMBY) movement say it does; others are more skeptical. The market-rate-skeptic’s view, as captured in Richard Florida’s write-up of a new paper by Andrés Rodríguez-Pose and Michael...

Who Can Adopt a Native American Child? A Texas Couple vs. 573 Tribes [nytimes.com]

By Jan Hoffman, NY Times, June 5, 2019. FORT WORTH — The 3-year-old boy who could upend a 40-year-old law aimed at protecting Native American children barreled into the suburban living room, merrily defying his parents’ prediction that he might be shy. He had a thatch of night-black hair and dark eyes that glowed with mischievous curiosity. As he pumped a stranger’s hand and scampered off to bounce on an indoor trampoline, his Superman cape floated behind him, as if trying to catch up.
