Lessons in Systems Change Through an Equity Lens (webinar)

To register for this event, click here

This SSIR Live! program will explore:

  • How different organizations, in different communities, define equity in the context of systems change
  • Ways to effectively integrate an equity lens into systems change initiatives, and what that looks like at different stages of a community systems change initiative
  • Practical experiences of community organization leaders

When funders, public entities, and nonprofit organizations think about “systems change,” they rightly consider both the broad strategy and tactical processes necessary to achieve that goal. But systems change ultimately is “people change.” When designing a strategy to change systems, it is imperative to integrate an equity lens—striving to eradicate structural and racial inequities that serve as barriers to that change, and incorporating the perspectives and lived experiences of everyone with a vital stake in the outcome.

In this SSIR Live! program, leaders from three different organizations that are engaged in community initiatives as part of investments in systems change will share their perspectives on questions such as:

  • What power dynamics exist in your community that you need to consider as you integrate an equity lens into your systems change initiative?
  • How are you listening to and incorporating insights from members of the community?
  • To what degree will these systems change strategies begin to break down structural racial, ethnic, and gender inequities in communities?
  • Based on your experience, how can funders, community leaders, and nonprofit organizations integrate the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of historically underrepresented individuals into decision making to create systems change?

We will ask the panelists to describe the tangible lessons learned, challenges faced, and paths forward in their attempts to break down structural and systemic inequities while changing systems. We will also ask them to discuss any tools that they have found effective in their communities. Along with reflections from the three panelists, we will ask program participants to share their own experiences integrating an equity lens into systems change.
