Emotional Competence: Building Safe and Healthy Communities

The Tomkins Institute is excited to offer a two-day workshop for agency heads, senior administration, and staff in which the neurobiology underlying our emotions is taught, the negativity bias of the brain is explained, and effective means of de-escalating potentially difficult or dangerous interactions are taught and practiced.   Because of the 6 negative affects hardwired into our limbic systems, it becomes clear that all people need to develop the ability to monitor their own levels of negative affect, and create an "Emotional First Aid Kit" of hierarchical strategies to modulate and reduce these negative affects.   The practical use of this knowledge and these strategies will be presented in the arenas of law enforcement, mental health and in the schools.
