Trauma Informed Supports: Building Capacity for Direct Support Workers - Hamilton, Ontario

Many direct support providers have not received the required training to support this population in healing from trauma. This 1-day workshop, which has been developed in accordance with the values of inclusion, person-centered practice, self-determination, and celebration of diversity, will be of interest to those working with or caring for individuals with a developmental disability or dual diagnosis.

This workshop will benefit anyone working with or caring for children, youth or adults with a developmental disability or dual diagnosis including developmental service workers, residential care staff, personal support workers, case managers, community protection workers, family resource workers.

This course is recommended for service providers in a variety of settings including community-based mental health, residential or day treatment programs, healthcare and hospitals.

  1. Define trauma and identify various classifications of trauma such as PTSD, developmental trauma and traumatic stress response.
  2. Describe what symptoms of trauma may look like in people with Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD).
  3. Identify factors which make people with IDD vulnerable to trauma.
  4. Develop strategies to promote staff wellness
  5. Develop a personal self-care plan
