How It Feels & How We Heal: Parenting with ACEs Chat Quotes (You Tube, Database, PDFs, Links)

Parenting with ACEs is sharing inspiration, information, and expertise from our chat series in 3 formats.

  1. Parenting with ACEs: How It Feels & How We Heal Quote Collection
    (pdf version below as well)
  2. Quotes Database (pdf version below as well)
  3. Links to Chat Transcripts and before and after-the-chat blog posts.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, who shared, and who is doing the important work that is our mission (prevent ACEs, heal trauma, build resilience). We know that work happens individually, in families, in communities and in systems and all of it is important, necessary, and valuable.

We also know sharing about healing, parenting, and trusting others enough to open up is not easy for anyone but can be especially challenging when talking about ACEs, parenting, hurts and finding hope and healing.

Our hope is to join together more often to achieve our mission. We also hope to ease suffering by honoring the experiences and stories, and sharing our collective wisdom whenever and wherever possible. Too many people are hurting and struggling, and feeling shamed and blamed rather than seen and supported, heard or honored.

Quote 6

We believe in the collective power of community, the healing power of conversations, and the need to learn from parents and survivors as well as researchers, clinicians, and authors.

2. Quotes Database Highlights from Chat Series & Transcripts

Selected quotes have been pulled out from our eight chat transcripts. This is for those who want more than the 50 quotes in the PowerPoint slide but don't have time to read through all eight of our chat transcripts (they are long). Note:  We do link to all eight chat transcripts on page 1 in case you want to dive deeper on one or two topics only. This is also attached, below, as a pretty lengthy pdf.

There was so much shared in context, in conversation, and that couldn't be pulled out into a single sentence or quote. If you have the time or inclination to dig a big deeper or to revisit a conversation or topic, see links below.

Thank you to everyone who participated for sharing questions, stories, and expertise! Thanks to our guests who generously donated their time and talent. They are all inspiring and influential, and put the lives and experiences of those most impacted by  trauma and ACEs at the center of their work.

On a personal note, learning to build community and try to create change rather than only to write and agitate about what's not worked for trauma survivors, parents, and moms in particular, has required me to build new muscles and skills and open my mind and heart. I've spent LOTS of done and LOTS of work healing but I'm still learning and grateful for the grace and persistence of others who have supported and challenged me. I have more work to do.

Today, when organizing this series, I notice how parents of color and poor parents, as well as fathers, are included and how most of the guests are also white woman, like me. That was something I did not even notice or see when starting this series. It's a failure and it is mine.  I often say how ignorance is not benign. Mine is not either. So if I were to do this series again today I would do it differently. Since I can't do that I am going to share a helpful tool relevant to our ACEs and Parenting with ACEs work (personally and professionally).

Let's keep this conversation and community going.  We hope to celebrate and make accessible the collective wisdom of our entire community. We hope the chats and conversations bring deeper contacts, connections, collaborations, and conversations.

This chat series would not have been possible without the constant support of @Dana Brown (PACEs Connection Staff) who was warm and supportive, but also helped with just about every single chat. I appreciate the assistance and participation of the ACEs Connection team as well for allowing me to experiment with this format and tool. Thanks to Itzel Ruiz and Catrin Doherty for help organizing, selecting, and presenting quotes!

Hi Cissy - I so wish I were going to be there (and I'd love to meet you in person!). Unfortunately, I'm already committed to giving two presentations at Ft. Irwin during that time. I look forward to hearing all about it.
