TIC Take Five: Navigating through Grief: Supports for Ourselves and Others

Melanie G Snyder ·
Here's another in a little series we're posting over on the Lancaster County (PA) ACES & Resilience Connection site to promote a regular practice to "take five" (minutes) for self-care. Sharing with the wider ACES Connection community in case it's helpful. Peace. Be well, everyone. In an article last week in Harvard Business Review, titled “That Discomfort You’re Feeling is Grief”, grief expert David Kessler names the multiple types of losses we’re experiencing in the midst of the...

When Hidden Grief Gets Triggered During COVID-19 Confinement

Tian Dayton ·
first published by The Meadows 4/15/20 Our sense of loss during the current COVID-19 crisis can trigger hidden emotions from when we experienced a sense of loss before. Whatever early losses you have had in your life — whether they be your own divorce, your parents, or both, or the abandonment of one parent, a childhood or parental illness or death, financial upheaval, constant moving around, or growing up with parental addiction or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) — they are likely to...

Kathy Brous ·
Today is a six-year milestone for me: I've just uploaded my book "Don't Try This Alone: The Silent Epidemic of Attachment Disorder" to Amazon's editors! 😸 😍 It should be on sale 2nd half November. A professional artist designed a new book cover so I also just changed my website today to show it off. Here's my new website showing parts of the book jacket: http://attachmentdisorderhealing.com/allan-schore/

After My Wife Died I Was Consumed by Both Grief and Paperwork. We Must Work Together to Change the Medical System [time.com]

Carey Sipp ·
By Daniel Jonce Evans, TIME, May 20, 2020 After finding a parking space I stopped and shifted my minivan into park. I sat still for a moment, a moment that allowed me to take a breath in relative silence. Silence, sitting in that driver’s seat, had a particular sound. It encroached after relays clicked and vent fans stopped. The engine crackled while cooling. Still hanging from the ignition, keys on the ring touched once or twice, singing their acknowledgement that their cohort completed the...

Birth Trauma, an anniversary

Joyelle Brandt ·
For mothers who experienced traumatic births, these birthdays are the cruelest of celebrations. We are supposed to smile and shower love on our children, and never admit that on these days we would really love to curl up in a ball and sob. We are not supposed to say that having our children took too high a toll on our physical and mental health. We are not supposed to mention just how badly our medical and social systems failed to support us when we needed it the most.

E-Newsletter for youth and adults impacted by parental addiction: Grief

Agnes Chen ·
National Grief Awareness Week "Crying isn't the hurt, it is the process of being unhurt". Althea Solter ------------ The chronic grief of children and youth who are impacted by a parent's substance use can often go unacknowledged or be invalidated. As such, it is important for professionals to understand the chronic loss that can occur in a child's life when a parent struggles with addiction, particularly if both parents struggle. This grief can be compounded by a stigma that prevents...

Talking to Your Kids About Grief Is Painful. And You Have to Do It. (nytimes.com)

Natalie Audage ·
By Miranda Featherstone. The New York Times, November 19, 2021 In September, on one of the first days that felt like fall, we drove from our house in Rhode Island to my father’s house in Massachusetts to spend the weekend. It is still hard for me to write or say “my father’s house.” Until recently, it was “my parents’ house,” but my mother died in June after a short illness, and her simple gray purse no longer sits on the hall table. From the moment we arrived, my 8-year-old seemed out of...

As Families Grieve, Grandparents Step Up [nytimes.com]

Natalie Audage ·
By Paula Span, Photographs by Todd Heisler, The New York Times, April 12, 2022 This is not what Ida Adams thought life would be like at 62. She had planned to continue working as a housekeeper at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore until she turned 65. After retiring, she and her husband, Andre, also 62, thought they might travel a little — “get up and go whenever we felt like it.” She didn’t expect to be hustling a seventh-grader off to school each weekday. But in January 2021, Ms. Adams’s...

Losing a parent can derail teens' lives. A high school grief club aims to help [lakeshorepublicradio.org]

Natalie Audage ·
By Rhitu Chatterjee, NPR, July 24, 2022 Shortly after Elizabeth George started her freshman year in high school last fall, her parents tested positive for COVID-19. And Elizabeth stepped up to take care of them. "I was running the house, sort of," says the soft-spoken 15-year-old. "I was giving them medicine, seeing if everyone is OK." Elizabeth's mother recovered, but her father was hospitalized. He died in September of last year. His death turned Elizabeth's world upside down. In the weeks...
