Empathy and Reading Comprehension Song!

image

I wrote the song "Handle with Care" as I was dealing with the murder of my husband's grandmother (hence the dedication to Valentine Marie Williams).  The process of writing the song helped me in the healing, and in also in my feeling hopeful that I could, indeed, reach out to touch young lives to assist them in developing increased empathy and compassion for others.

I also hope and pray that it fosters in listeners/ singers a feeling of empowerment --- and an inclination --- to make a positive difference in lives where they see suffering, looking at those around them with a "trauma-informed lens."

Some of you may recognize that I based the concepts in the lyrics largely upon the well-known "Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi"; however, as a public schoolteacher, I of course had to present the message in a secular way.

And, for those who do work with students, I have attached some (optional!) instructional recommendations for those who may wish to help students explore more deeply the messages contained in the lyrics (and also check students' reading comprehension by doing so).

These lyrics are all wonderful but for people of all ages, I especially love the second stanza.

Instead of waiting for you to dry my tears,
I'll dry yours, and comfort you.
Instead of waiting for you to understand me,
I'll do my best to understand you.
Instead of waiting for you to love me,
I'll show my love for you.

I'm going to share these lyrics with my daughter.

Also, I'm sorry for your loss. It's inspiring that you took something so painful and created something so good. I'm glad it helped your own healing as well as being beneficial for others.

Wonderful lyrics, Linda. So that people can get an idea of the song, here they are:

1 HANDLE WITH CARE

CHORUS
Where there is hatred, I'll bring love;
We can settle things by talking, you'll see.
Where there is sadness, I'll bring joy;
I'll help you to smile again.
Where there's been harm done,
I'll ease the pain,
And help the forgiving begin.

1.
My vision is all people living in peace,
Though I can't change the world in a day,
I'll start with myself and the people I know,
And from there the caring will grow.
To help stop the hating and hurting and fear,
Here is what I'm going to do ...

CHORUS

2.
Instead of waiting for you to dry my tears,
I'll dry yours, and comfort you.
Instead of waiting for you to understand me,
I'll do my best to understand you.
Instead of waiting for you to love me,
I'll show my love for you.

CHORUS

3.
I rejoice when you feel glad,
I’m concerned when you feel sad.
I'll do my best to care for you,
And welcome your caring for me; for treating
Others with care and respect for their rights
Is the only way we'll live in peace.

CHORUS, repeating last line at end
