Is a Child in Danger from Fire at School or Bullying?

 

I wrote an article for Our Parenting Spot on the issue of Child Safety in Schools. I did research on what kind of standards the education system has that assures parents about safety in schools from threats such as fire or bullying. The way we handle these two dangers indicates that although we talk a great deal about bullying, we do not really treat it as a danger. This becomes strange and problematic when we look at the stats on injury and death by fire versus injury and death by bullying. The former is negligible whereas the latter is shockingly high.

Our society will never become safe or healthy until we respond to bullying with an outside emergency number to call, instant response that arrives as rapidly as possible, professionals who know how to address the dangerous situation, and medical intervention to heal any injuries. Schools that cannot pass bullying drills and cannot meet standards set by regulatory bodies should be shut down until they can ensure child safety. 

That would mean almost every school in North America and beyond would need to be shut down. 

How did it ever become normalized for parents to send their children into schools that are so unsafe?
