Rural Oregon County Integrates ACEs Screening in School-Based Trauma-Informed Health Centers
For the last two years, nearly all students referred for mental health services in seven school-based health centers in Deschutes County, OR, have taken the 10-question adverse childhood experiences (ACE) survey.
It didn’t take long to realize why this was good idea.
“The average ACE score for a student being seen by a Deschutes County clinician was 5 out of 10,” says Elizabeth Fitzgerald, supervisor of school-based health centers at Deschutes County Health Services.

Safety First - Toxic Stress in Education
What is the purpose of having school without power?
I work in a small school in a big state. The local school community had the power shut over the weekend as a preventive action for avoiding fires. This morning I was told that there would be school without power and to plan to provide services and teach children without power.
My instinct was - this is not safe!

Interesting we have been teaching two graduate level classes for teachers on trauma informed care for several years. As well as a ceu class for teacher recertification. We use our text Supporting and educating traumatized students, Oxford university press. we have also been offering this class to all of the teachers working in the juvenile justice in the state of Ohio. we would be more than glad to share syllabi or other resources if there is an interest

If not us educators to be that caring adult in that child or teenager's life...then who will fill that role? A school that will implement these trauma informed practices creates safety and consistent predictable outcomes. Another excellent article and example for us to understand we must circle around the students... not work from silos that cause confusion.

Absolutely Heidi! In fact, we need regulated adults to avoid dis-regulating children (originally or further). In my parenting work and professional development for teachers (including preschool and chid care pro's) I help adults recognize how and when child behavior triggers their own disregulated and thus disregulating reactions, and how to transform their responses with mindfulness, a process I call The Method , and the 7 Mindsets . Hi Martha, Grants will be made mainly to state educational agencies, so your best bet is to engage your state's mental health program. The Request for Grant Proposals (RFP) will need to be made in partnership with your state's educational agencies. The sooner you can start the process of engaging partnerships with other organizations and with your state's mental health agency, the better; the RFP's will be available in Spring and agencies won't have a lot of time to respond at that point.

We would like more information on how to submit for this grant. Is there a link now to review or is there a way to get on the "list" to be notified of the grant opening?
