Join a webinar on Friday (Jan. 11) featuring Alaska’s new statute directing state policy to incorporate principles of brain development

Please join ACEs Connection and the Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy and Practice (CTIPP) for a free 60-minute webinar this Friday (Jan. 11) starting 8:00am AK/ 9:00am PT/ 12:00pm ET that features a new Alaskan statute directing state policy to incorporate principles of brain development.  Hear the story first hand from the champion of the bill in the Alaska legislature, Rep. Geran Tarr, and the lead advocacy group—the Alaska Resilience Initiative—executive director, Laura Norton-Cruz.  The session is co-moderated by Andrea Blanch, a consultant on trauma-informed approaches and systems change, and Elizabeth Prewitt, ACEs Connection’s Policy Analyst.

Background on the Alaska success story

In spring of 2018, Alaska’s legislature passed a statute that says it is the state should “acknowledge and take into account” the principles of brain development and the concepts of early adversity, toxic stress, childhood trauma, and promotion of resilience in developing public policy. The passage of this statewide Trauma-Informed language is the result of years of education by and collaboration among those in the ACEs field in Alaska and the perseverance and creativity of its sponsor.  This webinar will describe:

  • The history of the work that set the stage for this legislation
  • Details of the successful strategy that included flexible responsiveness as well as relationship and coalition building
  • Strategies to build upon this legislation in a new political season with a brand new administration and new House and Senate compositions.
