Grounded in our belief that no one person, team, or organization
can transform community health on their own—The BUILD Health
Challenge
®
has endeavored to support
dynamic multi-sector, community-driven
partnerships aimed at reducing health
disparities caused by systemic inequality.
And after working with 37 communities
across the country over the last three
years with that mission in mind, one thing
has become clear—moving resources,
attention, and action upstream to address
root causes of chronic disease in a
community can be difficult, but it’s not
impossible.
Learning f rom BUILD awardees who have
dedicated their efforts to tackling food
insecurity, revitalizing neighborhoods,
changing breastfeeding culture, and
a variety of other social, physical, and
economic factors influencing health, we’ve seen time and time
again that when specific approaches are implemented, namely
B
old,
U
pstream,
I
ntegrated,
L

D
ata-Driven approaches,
meaningful change affecting the health of a community can happen.
We’ve done our best to document the processes, the successes, and
the failures along the way, and f rom those real-world experiences
we’ve created a set of preliminary tools that can inform and guide
those interested in learning about the unique BUILD approach.
What these tools are not at this stage
is final. While sharing early versions
of these materials with peers and the
BUILD communities, there was a sense of
excitement about how they could inform
our collective work. And so rather than wait
to release these tools when they are “final,”
we are sharing them now with the hope
that you’ll offer your thoughts on how
we can improve them and make them
more useful to you. From there we plan
to implement the feedback, update it as
appropriate, and ultimately produce a more
comprehensive guide that will continue to
evolve over time as we learn more f rom
you and the BUILD communities.
Thank you for taking the time to join us on
this journey to drive sustainable improvements in community health!
Onward!
