There's another important opportunity to determine if and how new state money will support community-based youth development services. The Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) has a new duty to distribute around $26 Million of new tax money raised from Proposition 64, which decriminalized adult use of marijuana. The BSCC is allowed to spend the money on "public health and safety programs" that can include local youth substance abuse prevention and intervention programs, but also law enforcement strategies to combat illegal marijuana growing and sales. So, it's really important that we get allies like you directly involved in how the money will be spent!

The BSCC is currently accepting applications for a new Executive Steering Committee that will oversee writing the new grant program's Request for Proposals (RFP) and grading the applications. The committee application can be found here. Applications are due at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2019. To apply, you must email your basic contact information, plus a maximum 1-page Microsoft Word document describing your professional or life experiences that would make you a good committee member.

Some important things to keep in mind:

  • All meetings take place in Sacramento, and food and travel will be covered by the BSCC.
  • There will be at least 3 meetings you must attend in Sacramento.
  • You cannot serve on the committee if you apply to this grant program.

I hope you consider applying and encourage others to apply as well, so we have the chance to make the Committee full of people with direct experience and community-focused organizers, service providers, researchers and advocates! Also, please let Dominique Nong (dnong@childrensdefense.org) know if you or someone else plans to apply
