Essentials for Childhood Initiative 6/11 Webinar: California’s Budget & Legislative Landscape: Impact of a Pandemic on Child Wellbeing

The Essentials for Childhood (EfC) Initiative is reaching out to share that in place of the convening originally scheduled for April 3rd, 2020 that there will be several remote-learning and engagement meetings held throughout the months of April, May, and June. These meetings will support efforts to improve and enhance child wellbeing throughout California in light of COVID-19 and complement the focus areas of the EfC Initiative subcommittees (i.e., Policy, Equity, Strengthening Economic Supports, Trauma-Informed Practices, and Data).

The EfC Initiative invites your participation in the third meeting in this web-series entitled “California’s Budget & Legislative Landscape: Impact of a Pandemic on Child Wellbeing” on Thursday, June 11 from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM for a special guest presentation from Kelly Hardy, Senior Managing Director of Health & Research for Children Now.

This interactive webinar will provide an overview of the current legislative and budget situation in California, with a focus on child wellbeing. The state has quickly moved from an expected budget surplus to a significant budget deficit, and legislators have been asked to severely limit the number of bills they are carrying and focus on COVID-19 response. In addition, federal relief funds are being made available, but only for certain issues and programs. Kelly Hardy will lead a discussion about what this means for our children, and what key initiatives are still on the table.

Together, Hardy and attendees will discuss:

  • An update on the implementation of trauma screenings
  • Where opportunities exist to protect children and families from state budget cuts
  • The latest on federal relief funds
  • Pro-active initiatives to support kids and families

Please bring any information that you have to share about the budget and legislative landscape for the facilitated discussion that will be led by EfC Initiative, Policy Subcommittee Chairs, Flojaune Cofer and Pamela Mejia.
