This five-part webcast series, The Way Forward, is designed to foreground the concept of dehumanization as the foundation for systemic racism and racial trauma. Forward Promise is convening experts from direct service organizations and youth-serving systems (like education and family services) to discuss how dehumanization manifests in these spaces and how we can substantively disrupt dehumanization for boys and young men of color (BYMOC) and their communities. Each episode addresses one of the five dimensions of dehumanization and presents solutions that affirm the humanity of BYMOC.
Episode 1: August 25, 2020: Start at The Root: Disrupting Historical Dehumanization
Dehumanization is the root cause of generations of historical trauma and has led to the mass destruction, punishment, or control of land and people. Panelists will discuss the root of dehumanization, its health impacts on BYMOC, and offer solutions for healing that affirm their full humanity. Wath the replay here: https://youtu.be/KxmNNhyyyFI
COMING UP! Episode 2: September 8, 2020: Return Me to Myself: Disrupting the Dehumanization of Our Cultures and Spirits
Cultural/spiritual dehumanization occurs when the practices of communities of color are demonized, disregarded, devalued, or marginalized. Panelists will discuss how this is expressed in schools and communities, the health impacts on BYMOC, and offer solutions that reclaim and center cultural and spiritual identities in the learning process.
