Building community by facing collective trauma with hope

Chaplain Chris Haughee ·
It was a sunny fall afternoon a few years ago. A friend posed a very interesting question as we ate our dinner on the deck at a local restaurant. “What do you think, Chris, about the possibility of a whole group of people experiencing a reaction to trauma? Like, maybe our whole nation is still traumatized from 9-11-01, or Katrina, or maybe just a whole host of cascading traumatic events?” We spoke at some length about what a reaction to trauma would look like in a society at large, and it...

Caring for Trauma Survivors and Caring for Yourself in the Process: Everyday Tips for Non-Professionals [PsychCentral.com]

Grace Watt ·
Elise just told me about her past. I knew she had been through a lot, but not all that. She said her mom hit her and left bruises when she was a kid, her neighbor touched her where she didn’t want to be touched, and I guess her brother was alcoholic. There was a lot of other stuff, too. It has gotten better in the last couple years so that is good. I have known their whole family for a long time and never knew any of that. What do I do now? I want to help somehow, but is there anything to...

Chaplain Chris Haughee Interview

Teri Wellbrock ·
To quote a friend who just gave her testimony at our church about her own struggles with mental health misdiagnosis and recovery, she was told after her first hospitalization, “This won’t be the first time you deal with this.” Our trauma is always with us.

Six-week adult Sunday school curriculum on trauma-informed ministry coming soon!

Chaplain Chris Haughee ·
Within the next month, I will be making available a draft version of an adult Sunday School curriculum that will introduce the concept of trauma-informed ministry to churches. If there are members of ACEsConnection that would like to "test run" the curriculum, I'd be honored if you'd reach out to me in the comments section or via a direct message. Email works, too! Just send to chrish@intermountain.org. The curriculum just takes a look at the "slice" of trauma-informed ministry that I am...

The Books That Helped Me Transition from Trauma to Triumph: A Book Review Series - "The Power of Now"

Teri Wellbrock ·
The author takes us on a journey into a deep place within us, a place where the truth is known "within every cell of (our) body"; beyond the masks we wear, the criticisms we've cloaked ourselves in, our over-thinker personas, fueled by the old doubts we've absorbed into our beings.

Re: Building community by facing collective trauma with hope

Ed Martin ·
One of the concepts I try to invoke to the community is the transforming power of being there — connecting rather than separating. Abraham Lincoln is quoted, “I don’t like that man. I need to get to know him better.” And “Do I not lose my enemies when I make them my friends?” Jesus befriended Zaccheus. Zaccheus was transformed in that he worked for the better of his community (Luke 19). Instead of asking, “Why did you do that?” ask, “Why are you hurting?” I’ve worked with those with...

Jaime J. Romo, Ed.D. ·
Hi, Chris, I'm interested in seeing what you have created. I've led/ invited a variety of presentations in my congregation, but we haven't had a coherent program of any sort specific to trauma. Please share. Peace, Jaime

Chaplain Chris Haughee ·
Christina, Jaime, and James-- Thank you for your interest! I am building a list of those that are interested in testing out the curriculum, and the best way for me to get your information would be via email. Could you send me your contact information to chrish@intermountain.org if you haven't already? Thank you! Chris

Hope for Healing: A Mother's Triumph

It's her victory reward for overcoming her addiction. Now celebrating one and a half years sober! Look how far she's come since the first half of 2019! Hospitalized for detox from alcohol, repeated falls requiring hospital and rehab facility stays, threats of suicide, and trying desperately to escape the pain of her childhood trauma.

New devotional book, Hope for Healing, seeks to give trauma-informed ministry insight

Chaplain Chris Haughee ·
I am proud/relieved/gratified at finally being able to share a labor of love with the "PACES" community. It has been a struggle, the book project--yes, but just life and ministry in general have been hard over the past year. My family and I, personally, continue to walk the path of navigating all the complexities that come from trauma and working through that trauma in the context of ministry. I understand that many of you are in the same situation and can understand. The book, Hope for...
