Covenant Pastors Collaborate to address Mental Health, ACEs

Chaplain Chris Haughee ·
I couldn't be prouder of my home church, Headwaters Covenant Church in Helena, MT. Throughout the fall, we have been purposefully and carefully addressing subjects that the church often avoids. Among these topics are the family dysfunction that results from generational trauma, the prevalence of adversity in childhood within families in Montana, training in suicide awareness and prevention, and moral injury (especially among our veterans and service men and women). Just this last Sunday we...

What Do Coronavirus Racial Disparities Look Like State by State [npr.org]

Carey Sipp ·
By Maria Godoy and Daniel Wood, National Public Radio, May 30, 2020 In April, New Orleans health officials realized their drive-through testing strategy for the coronavirus wasn't working. The reason? Census tract data revealed hot spots for the virus were located in predominantly low-income African-American neighborhoods where many residents lacked cars. In response, officials have changed their strategy, sending mobile testing vans to some of those areas, says Thomas LaVeist , dean of...

One of those disparities concerns the high rate of coronavirus transmission among people of color. To talk about the intersection of race and health, KQED's Brian Watt spoke last week with California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, who is known for her pioneering work on the role that childhood stress and trauma play on...

GUEST EDITORIAL: We need a new model for mental health [heraldtribune.com]

By Andrea Blanch, Sarasota Herald-Tribune, July 27, 2020 People are really stressed out right now. A recent national survey reports that “serious psychological distress” — the kind that can lead to longer-term psychiatric disorders — has more than tripled since this time last year. We are already seeing the consequences in Sarasota County, with the number of opioid-related deaths in the first half of 2020 more than double the number in all of 2019. And based on experience with SARS, experts...

But she said she still panics whenever she has to see a new neurologist because of racial discrimination she’s experienced in the past. The Intersection of Systematic Racism, the Pandemic, and SDoMH: Reality Mandates Change

Ellen Fink-Samnick ·
Systematic racism is at the core of mental health disparities and social determinants of mental health (SDoMH).Upstream factors obstruct patient access to needed and appropriate assessment, timely intervention, with treatment for these populations often reflecting poorer quality, and ending prior to completion of treatment. COVID-19 and the recent pandemic have only amplified meso and micro-level gaps in care. considered, provided, and reimbursed.

To solve the Black maternal mortality crisis, start with upending racist practices

Laurie Udesky ·
It’s been all over the news for months: Black women in the United States are dying from complications during their pregnancies or in childbirth at alarming rates, and those deaths are preventable. Less well explored is how systemic racism and historical trauma have been at the core of what’s driven up these rates over several decades. A March 20 conference entitled The Impact of ACEs on Black Maternal Health took an in-depth look into why Black maternal mortality and complications during...

The Struggle Is Real - The Church and Mental Health

Antonio Clinkscales ·
Saturday, May 15, 2021 @9:00 AM/EST This transformational conference will enlighten and empower the faith community to become more aware, intentional, and engaging partners in the healing process to an existing population within every house of worship. In my 20+ years of experience, I've learned the core reason why more places of worship aren't prepared or equipped to minister to those struggling with mental health, is because they simply don't know how. This conference will instruct those...

I don't have a website but the topic centers around how the faith community can play a more vital role in the healing process of those struggling with ACEs. The session should last about 2 hours or less depending on the question and answer session. I will be presenting my years of experience of combining both faith and science. Hope you can join the diverse group of believers for a transformative conversation and experience.

Spirituality and Health in Our Federal Government

Dale Fletcher ·
I’m dismayed that our federal government’s health-related initiatives and websites do not include spirituality in their frameworks for health and wellbeing. Consequently, the spiritual dimension of health is not recommended as a resource to improve individual health and wellbeing and the nation’s public health.

What Children Really Need Is Adults That Understand Development

Deborah McNelis M.Ed ·
The brain doesn’t fully develop until about the age of 25. This fact is sometimes quite surprising and eye opening to most adults. It can also be somewhat overwhelming for new parents and professionals who are interacting with babies and young children every day, to contemplate. It is essential to realize however, that the greatest time of development occurs in the years prior to kindergarten. And even more critical to understand is that by age three 85 percent of the core structures of the...

Because of the efforts of COPE24, Missouri has mandated a new requirement for high school graduation. We have changed the previously required "Health" class to "Health and Family Education". We begin merging pieces of the health, parenting and child development curriculum into this class. All states should be seeking a way to get this done. We cannot break the generational cycle of family dysfunction without education.
